Meet Edna Pines - Canvas Rebel Interview

AUGUST 28, 2023

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Edna Pines. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Edna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s jump back to the first dollar you earned as a creative? What can you share with us about how it happened?

For many years I didn’t take myself seriously as an artist. I made a vow to call myself one, only if and when I sell my first painting to a total stranger. About 20 years ago that day came when I went to a frame shop to frame two of my oil paintings that I did with palette knife. A woman walked in, froze in her spot, loved the paintings and commissioned me to do one for her family after she found out I was the creator of the paintings. When the family saw the painting for the first time, immediately became emotional and then I was hooked with the impact of such a tender connection through art.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

I am a first generation immigrant refugee, a minority and a woman born and raised in Iran. Due to the Iranian Revolution in 1979 as a young teenager, my family and I had to flee the homeland for our safety. A prominent and close relative was wrongfully accused and executed simply for being Jewish with a 10 minute trial with no attorney present. Having always been creative, helped keep me grounded and happy in my new surroundings where everything was foreign. Culture, language, clothes, food, music, diversity, freedom, equal rights, possibilities and opportunities.

Being creative was second nature to me as a young child. Having the opportunity for being well traveled around the world visiting museums, it opened up my eyes in learning so much by studying the brush strokes up close of the paintings of the old masters in person and reading through many books. The experience I gained over the years as an artist has helped me create collections of paintings in many styles mainly landscape using acrylic, oil and mixed media with the use of brushes and palette knives.

Painting has helped me realize the importance of ones self-worth and that’s what I like to share with my viewers. My optimistic views in life and bubbly personality sets me apart from others and can be contagious! Aside being a proud mom, I am proud of myself for stepping outside of my comfort zone and put myself out there to share love, joy, happiness and self-worth with others through my works, specially women. You can not help yourself not to get excited when you walk into my working studio and be immediately taken back with happiness when you see the bright colors and feel the energy in each painting.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?

The most rewarding aspect of being an artist has been the fact that how much my work has enabled me to make connections with people of all ages and the impact it has made on an emotional level for my clients. Inspiring others alike to take the leap of following their dream has been a very exciting journey.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?

My goal and mission driving my creative journey is to satisfy the thirst for creating and fulfill the inner child dream of mine that was not culturally supportive or taken seriously growing up as a girl in the Middle East. Also, the pleasure of helping and supporting others in the similar situation to see their full potentials in this line of work.
